Just a week ago, the New Yorker described the biennial festival of the NAHMF as such:
“Three evenings of culture and entertainment organized by the North American Historical Museum Foundation. An event which hosts galas, concerts, charity auctions, with multiple shows and free entrance to museums in all of North America. An unmissable kermesse which attracts every two years thousands of enthusiasts as well as artists, performers, philanthropists, ViPs and wealthy patrons.”
However, different words would have been spent by that same newspaper after the events which occurred during those evenings. Incredible, tragic and extraordinary events which to these days cannot yet be fully understood. And this, is just the beginning of the tale.
The main event of the cultural exhibition was held on Vancouver Island, in a lavish colonial house near Victoria. During the event in those summer days the house was filled with countless scholars, enthusiasts, benefactors, reporters, historians and staff members. People with different heritage and view were all united under the same roof.
For most of the participants, the auction evening should have been a simple mundane event, in which the ancient and mysterious “Sceptre of Akor” would have been sold at the charity auction together with other historical artefacts which belonged to the ancient native civilizations called the Nunnes.
But the proud Upgraded represented by the glorious Lil’Gogo, which were attending the event, had plans for the auction. It needed to end with a public accusatory act directed to the political leaders of the Untamed. According to them, the leaders were responsible of covering up the actions of intolerant and violent groups menacing the Upgraded.
However the fierce and conservative Untamed were also hidden between the audience. Their secret political leader, the eminent Professor Zachary Eustace Lionel II wanted the evening to end with them recovering the Sceptre while also publicly denouncing the crimes perpetrated by the Neosurgery ltd. which would stop at nothing in order to see the Relmago project through.
The followers from both factions passed the previous evenings studying, spying and investigating each other, sure of being in the right. Alas, they remained shocked by the sheer number and the seriousness of the facts which the leaders of both factions were hiding or covering up. Thanks to the wit of Winry of the Untamed and to the love for truth of Dolor of the Upgraded, many thorny secrets were unveiled. Thus everybody could prepare for the worst.
Nonetheless nothing could have prepared them for the horror which they were about to witness.
Two horrible and abominable blood-thirsty creatures attacked the auction house. They were moved by a cruel but primordial intelligence. They wanted the sceptre. The origin of such creatures is still being investigated. Could it be that they were born of a failed Neosurgery’s experimental drug? Or might it be that they originated from the summoning of unnameable other-worldly beasts by unaware natives, ill-advised by members of the Untamed? Or maybe because of both? The creatures found no resistance between the participants of the event, thus piling up the bodies. The cruelty and the sadism of the two abominations grew still. This was due to the fact their victims came back to life to fight by their side, they became infected monsters just like their killers. This new horde was overwhelming and it would have quickly brought to a massacre.
However, when every hope seemed lost, the Untamed and the Upgraded decided to put aside their hatred and unite in a desperate mission. The Sceptre of Akor, which was stolen by some ruthless art traders during the attack, was recovered by Shrawn, a young dragon of the Upgraded. Nobody knew why the abominations wanted the sceptre, but it surely had an effect on them and it was able to cure those who were infected in the enemy ranks.
With a desperate but intelligent rebound the survivors fought together for their life. They managed to do it also thanks to the Nunnes artefacts which were wisely recovered. Thanks to their team-work the attack was stopped and Tobias, first of the abominations and one of the two original monstrous creatures, could find peace.
An apocalypse was prevented that night. The brave Untamed and Upgraded which united against a common enemy lead the way from that day to a process which would bring peace between the two factions.
Yet a small gathering of sentient monsters which inexplicably survived the annihilation of the first abomination is still hiding in the Canadian woods. They’re powerless and ever chased by the police and the army. Dolor is their leader, an heroic fighter which fell and came back as a monster. Whichever purpose moves him, and whichever entity whispers to his ears is still a mystery. Whether they’re actually a menace, if they’re only monsters or a pack of new unknown creatures, they will surely be feared for a long time.
